In our presentation for ARCO E-xhibitions in May 2021, we decided to relate two photographic positions from the gallery that have never been exhibited together before. In dealing with the portraits, both artists have developed a personal signature. For our presentation we chose portraits in which the you can't see the face of the portrayed, that is always veiled or covered.
The Hamburg based artist THORSTEN BRINKMANN, born 1971, takes staged photographs of himself. He uses discarded objects like vases, bowls and cans to disguise his head and slips into costumes in order to create various characters. Even though these photographies are self-portraits he always stays anonymous. He creates imaginary worlds with ‚other man’s trash’. Oftentimes he makes assemblages with these photographs, adding found objects to the image and therefore creating three-dimensional pieces. The works sometimes remind the viewer of popular works of art history showing equestrian statues or monarchs.
It has been more than 40 years since ANTON CORBIJN, born 1955, discovered photography though his love for music while still at high school in Holland. He used his father’s camera for his first photos at an open-air concert in 1972. He soon moved from stage photography to portrait photography, but initially only of musicians. Anton Corbijn moved to London in 1979 to follow his love of music from there and is today widely regarded as one of the most influential photographers both in the world of music and in the world of portraiture photography.
