Jiří Thýn

Thýn brings to the fore a new visuality, positioning reality on the background of the modernist canon, and addressing questions of our 'pictorial consciousness' (or unconsciousness). The 2 works presented here are being shown at the exhibition Lovelies from the Files: Sudek and Sculpture at the Prague House of Photography. They take as their starting point sculpture by Czech sculpture Josef Mařatka which Jiri then photographs, animating it with layers of object and drawing.

Jaromír Novotný

When viewing the work of Jaromír Novotný, zones where the painting stops closely before it reaches the very edge of the picture, are often noticeable. That form of passages from painting to unprocessed border area is not so much what Novotný would pursue as an artistic principle, but rather a result of decisions made intuitively or according to certain formal criteria in the course of a longer process. The composition is not prepared, but is developed while painting. This work was part of his 2019 solo exhibition at MUWA in Graz (AT).

Jaromír Novotný

Jaromír Novotný's large-scale paintings from this period concentrate on work with surface and depth, and with the relationship between monochrome painted surfaces and canvas borders. They point to the significance of physical experience, the painting itself accentuating the seminal properties of the medium. This painting is made up of three connected canvases and was exhibited at his solo exhibition "Visible Formats" at Prague City Gallery in 2012.

Jaromír Novotný

Jaromír Novotný recounts all the specific steps in his work while hanging and moving canvases, display cases or shelves. He set and combined, connected and divided individual pieces in the course of which they gained traction and aesthetic weight. Abstract compositions became figurative, not as singular canvases but within a certain space and in relation to other bodies. This work was part of his 2017 solo exhibition The Body of a Painting at hunt kastner.

Jiří Thýn

This work comes from the artist's series "Consciousness as a Fundamental Attribute", where he recycled existing images, intuitively selected, primarily from art magazines such as Frieze and Art Forum. By modifying them through cutting, pasting, painting and re-photographing, he completely re-contextualized the original images.

This variable large-format photographic work is from the artist's 2019 solo exhibition "Shape, Work, and Two Fat Bellies", which took its starting point from an iconic sculptural work by Alina Szapocznikow. The intuitive, emotional, colorful, multi-layered montage emerges from the motif of bellies the same way as emotion emerges from the belly of Szapocznikow's sculpture.
