Staircase at King Tide, Hollywood, Florida, 2019

Staircase at King Tide, Hollywood, Florida

Anastasia Samoylova

Pink is the most approachable color, and yet the most odd. It wants to be liked, but its heightened effects can be uncanny. A pink image can get to that mix of seduction and otherworldliness that is the essence of life in the sub-tropics. This staircase, leading to the mirror-like surface of a rising ‘king tide’, seemed like a set from a movie. The actors are absent, leaving an empty stage. It is perfectly still, but not for long.

Venus Mirror, Miami, 2020

Venus Mirror, Miami

Anastasia Samoylova

In Greek mythology, Venus was the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility. But this Venus is a mirror in a shop window in Miami’s boutique Designer District. She hovers pure but blank, in a refracted fantasy of materialism and leisure. Samoylova's observational photographs often look like collages, bits and pieces put together. But sometimes it’s the world itself that is a collage, particularly the world of consumerism with its kaleidoscopic distractions.

Camouflage, 2017

Camouflage

Anastasia Samoylova

In Camouflage a printed tarp, Samoylova's frequent trope, is propped to conceal an unsightly gap in the cultivated landscape of a park, Miami’s downtown in the background. A sprawling metropolis, despite all climatic odds, is gradually replacing the original flora with a printed version.

Park Avenue, 2017

Park Avenue

Anastasia Samoylova

Anastasia Samoylova made this photograph on a corner of the street in Miami Beach, where a printed construction billboard sheltered an empty facade of a historic Art Deco hotel, gutted for renovation. In the foreground is the city’s iconic pink sidewalk, a shadow from the sign post extending to the image within image, disrupting the trompe l’oeil. As with all photos from the project FloodZone, which are seldom direct reportage of the climate change, this image a visual metaphor, questioning a reality that’s increasingly built of images, and a future that nobody has guaranteed, but one can try and imagine, in a perfect shade of dusted pink.

Masts, 2018

Masts

Anastasia Samoylova

One foggy morning in St Petersburg, Florida, Anastasia Samoylova was walking past the city’s marina, where hundreds of well-kept boats are docked at premium rate. The sun was about to emerge through the thick humid air. A sound cloud of black birds in constant shuffle all over the boats’ masts was all-encompassing. That surreal scene from Hitchcock’s “The Birds” came to her mind. The idea of nature in revolt, a metaphor for an impending environmental reclamation. But, the serene fog and birds’ silhouettes were the only things portrayable by a still image, leaving her again with an allegory.

Dome House, 2018

Dome House

Anastasia Samoylova

In the shimmery water of Cape Romano, on Florida’s west coast, stands this ruin of a fantasy vacation home, built by an oil magnate in the 1980s. It was built on land, with 700 ft setback from the shore, but it is now entirely cut off by the encroaching water and only accessible by boat. Looking like a surreal, Dali-esque sea creature, the structure is a stark sign of the ever-shifting landscape.
